California employers can no longer ask job applicants about salary history

California joined several states and localities in passing legislation that will require all California employers to refrain from asking for or seeking salary history information from job applicants.

The law, which will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2018, will also prohibit employers from using salary history as a factor in determining whether to extend a job offer to an applicant or what salary to offer an applicant.

Additionally, if asked by an applicant, employers must provide a pay range for the position the applicant is seeking.
