Questionable background reporting practices draw ire of trucking industry

A number of commercial drivers have taken issue with one background screening firm's "Drive-a-Check" or "DAC" reports, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The reports, produced by HireRight LLC, shine light into driver’s employment histories, including accident histories and alleged unethical behavior, such as incomplete deliveries.

However, many drivers claim the reports are often rife with inaccuracies and unsubstantiated claims, ultimately making it difficult for them to find employment.

As one driver put it, “if a company uses DAC and you have a bad DAC, you’re not hired.”

Furthermore, drivers claim that HireRight falls short of their obligations under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act by failing to establish proper measures for the verification of the information provided in their reports and also failing to provide applicants with a chance to dispute the results of the reports.

The Wall Street Journal reports that HireRight has been sued by truck drivers “at least 11 times,” since 2012, settling six of those suits out of court, winning three, while two remain open.
