In the first incident, SterlingBackcheck disclosed that it recently suffered a security breach when a laptop containing personal identifying information (PII) was stolen from one of their employee’s car. According to the company, the laptop held an Excel file containing the names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth of certain applicants.
At Truescreen, our policies and software monitoring systems are designed to ensure that PII is not stored on laptops or any external devices. In addition, all laptops are secured with special authentication, and any data is fully encrypted.
In a separate incident, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) took action against General Information Services (GIS) and its affiliate, e-Background-checks.com, Inc. (BGC) for allegedly failing to take steps to assure the information reported about job applicants was accurate. GIS and BGC agreed to pay a total of $13 million in relief to consumers and penalties.
According to a consent order signed by GIS, BGC and the CFPB, the companies violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act by, among other things, failing to employ reasonable procedures to assure the maximum possible accuracy of the information contained in reports provided to consumers’ potential employers.
At Truescreen we take accuracy and FCRA compliance very seriously. Our documented research processes include numerous quality control check points and systematic safeguards designed to help ensure maximum possible accuracy of the information we report. Within our ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System, all research work instructions and employee training are strictly monitored and controlled.
In addition, we employ robust auditing functions to continually monitor and test our performance. This includes a dedicated company-wide internal audit team, quality auditing by external parties and research-level validation on every report that we produce.
