Louisiana becomes first state to "Ban the Box" during college admissions process

Gov. John Bel Edwards signed House Bill 688 into law legislation that will prohibit public colleges and universities in the state from inquiring about potential students' criminal histories.

The law will still allow schools to ask potential students about convictions related to sexual violence or stalking.

If an individual is denied admission as a result of one these types of convictions they will be able to appeal the denial.

The law will go into effect on Aug. 1, 2017.
