CALIFORNIA: New immigration-related law limits employers' ability to re-verify employees' work authorization unless specified by law
Summary: Assembly Bill 450 imposes several new immigration-related responsibilities on California employers with respect to worksite enforcement actions and compliance with the requirement under federal law to complete and maintain the Employment Eligibility Verification form (i.e. "Form I-9") for employees. This new law limits re-verification of employees' authorization of employment unless specified by federal immigration law.

U.S. SUPREME COURT: Additional parties file amicus briefs in Spokeo
Summary: A number of organizations and companies have filed amicus briefs in Spokeo's second petition to the Supreme Court, arguing that the justices' input is again necessary to clear up widespread "chaos and confusion." In their briefs, the amici seize on several common themes, including the divergent decisions that lower courts have reached since the initial Spokeo decision over what injury is sufficient to establish standing and move forward with a broad range of statutory privacy suits. The justices are scheduled to consider Spokeo's petition at their Jan. 19 conference, according to the docket.
