The law – which aims to alleviate the pay disparities that have historically affected women and minorities from the onset of their careers – also bars potential employers from conducting public records searches on pay history.
New York City mayor Bill de Blasio previously signed Executive Order 21 which prevented city agencies from inquiring about salary history.
New York City joins Massachusetts and Philadelphia as jurisdictions to pass laws prohibiting employers from making inquiries into applicants' and employees' salary history. Several other states and cities are also taking steps to introduce similar legislation.
Federal legislation has also been introduced to prohibit employers in all 50 states from asking applicants for their salary histories before making a job or salary offer.
